Jaunty: No sound outputs?

If you're running Jaunty, and since 28 Jan when you right-click the GNOME Volume Mixer applet and click Open Volume Control you see no sound outputs listed, it's a known bug believed to be a race condition with PulseAudio. It's being worked on, but in the meantime, you can restart PulseAudio using pulseaudio -k ; start-pulseaudio-x11

Also worth noting is that jaunty sound may be glitchy unless you add yourself to the 'pulse-rt' group.

Daniel Chen's response when I asked him about that:

The reason you're not automatically put into the pulse-rt group is that it is a potential security risk in a multi-user environment. You get real-time scheduling privileges and can thus DOS everybody else if you wanted to. It doesn't actually fix the underlying problem, just sort of masks the symptom.

Wow. I keep reading about stuff that saves me time here. There are so many pulse audio bugs I didn't know where to look.

I can now hear salsa music while I clean up :)

Thank you.

is this bug is sorted out you guys might aswell considering disabeling pulse audio in the session-manager. This way you will have sound without any interference from the current problems. Once the bug is sorted out you just enable it again.

WHERE and WHAT is the session-manager?!?!?!

System -> Preferences -> Session

Note that this post was irrelevant by the time Jaunty released, though. So, unless you're still using alpha 2 and haven't installed any updates, this has nothing to do with you.
